Ivory Lutherie Custom Guitars![]() Chris Ivory, a member of the Guild of American Luthiers, has been designing and building custom guitars for over a decade. Based on many years of experience repairing and restoring just about every major guitar brand out there, Chris decided to approach the design of the neck joint on the guitar from a different perspective. Most steel string acoustic guitars built today are based on a German design that dates back a century and a half. A common design feature is that the neck is attached to the body via a mortice-tenon or dovetail style joint and the fingerboard extends over and is glued to the face or top of the guitar. As a guitar ages, the tension of the strings pulls the neck upwards towards the body resulting in an increase of the height of the strings over the fingerboard (action). A secondary effect occurs in that the fingerboard develops a “hump” in the area where the neck attaches to the body. The solution is to remove the neck, recut the angle of the heel, and glue the neck back in place. Recent guitar designs have done away with this neck joint as it is costly to implement and is difficult to repair. These modern guitars utilize a “bolt-on” neck joint that facilitates this neck resetting process. Unfortunately these designs still have the fingerboard attached to the face of the guitar and thus the “hump” issue still needs to be dealt with. Although this makes the neck easier to remove, the fingerboard still needs to be detached from the face of the guitar as in most guitars this is still glued to the top. The Ivory Lutherie series of guitar models addresses these issues by using construction techniques that eliminate the neck “hump” common with mass-produced instruments. The neck bolts in place but the fingerboard extension is cantilevered over the body, that is, it is not attached to the top or face of the guitar. Carbon fiber inserts in the fingerboard extension ensure that the notes played on each fret of the fingerboard ring true exhibiting warmth and clarity of the notes. In addition each current production guitar features a fully compensated bone saddle that further enhances the intonation of the guitar yielding a full, warm, and centered sound that is sought after by many players. Additionally the Ivory Lutherie guitar line is a physically beautiful line that reflects Ivory’s commitment to esthetics. Only the finest solid tone woods are used for the back, sides, top and neck. When you pick up an Ivory guitar you will feel, hear, and see the extraordinary workmanship that only a master craftsman can create.
